Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about Merger, money dates, privacy, and getting started — for couples and singles alike.
Getting started & free trial
How do I sign up for Merger?
Tap “Start your free trial,” then create your account with an email and password — you’ll be set up in a couple of minutes. From there you can connect an account and run your first weekly check-in whenever you’re ready.
Do I need a credit card to start the free trial?
Yes — we ask for a payment method up front so your trial rolls straight into your plan if you decide to stay. You won’t be charged during the 14-day trial, and you can cancel before it ends if Merger isn’t for you.
How long is the free trial?
The free trial is 14 days, with full access to every feature — weekly check-ins, shared goals, your Financial Health Score, and the calculators. It’s plenty of time to see whether the weekly rhythm fits your life.
What happens when my trial ends?
When the 14-day trial ends, your account continues on the plan you chose at sign-up unless you’ve cancelled. You can cancel anytime before then and you won’t be charged.
Can I use Merger by myself, or is it only for couples?
Merger works great solo and for couples — same weekly check-ins, goals, calculators, and Financial Health Score. It’s built for two people sharing a life, and it fits just as well when that’s one.
Pricing & billing
How much does Merger cost?
Merger is $18.99 a month or $182.99 a year (that’s 20% off), after a 14-day free trial. One subscription covers your whole household, whether that’s just you or you and your partner.
Is the annual plan really cheaper?
Yes — the annual plan is $182.99 a year, which saves you 20% compared with paying monthly. If you know you’re in for the long haul, it’s the better deal.
Is it one price for the whole couple, or per person?
It’s one subscription per household, not per person — so a couple sharing one Merger household pays a single price. If you both happened to start plans separately before linking, they reconcile to one when you connect.
When will I be charged?
Your first charge lands when the 14-day free trial ends, then on the same date each billing cycle after that. You can cancel before the trial ends to avoid any charge.
What payment methods do you accept?
You can pay with a major credit or debit card at checkout. If you run into trouble adding your card, email us at Kameron@mergerinc.com and we’ll help.
Will my price change after I sign up?
We’ll always let you know in advance if pricing ever changes — there are no surprise increases mid-cycle. The plan and price you see at checkout are what you pay for that term.
How Merger works
What exactly is a weekly Money Date?
A Money Date is a short, guided weekly check-in where you celebrate wins, see how your spending compares with your plan, and pick one small action for the week ahead. It’s designed to be quick and low-stress — no spreadsheets, no shame.
What is the Financial Health Score?
It’s a single number that reflects how your money is doing across a few areas — things like staying on budget and keeping up your weekly check-ins. It gives you an at-a-glance sense of progress without needing to read a stack of reports.
What’s “budget drift”?
Budget drift is how far your spending has wandered from your plan, surfaced each week so you can make a small correction early. Catching it sooner means tiny adjustments instead of stressful month-end surprises.
Do I have to do this every week?
The weekly rhythm is where the magic is, but you set your own pace and nothing breaks if you miss a week. When you come back, you just pick up where you left off.
Do you connect to my bank accounts?
Yes — you can securely link your accounts through Plaid, the same service millions of apps use, with read-only access. We never see or store your banking password.
Are there tools to plan specific decisions?
Yes — we have free calculators for things like splitting a budget, paying off debt, and reaching a savings goal. They’re free to use and run right in your browser, no account needed.
Couples & accounts
Does Merger require a joint bank account?
No — you can see your household’s spending together while keeping your individual accounts exactly as they are. It’s built to merge your money picture without merging your bank accounts.
Can my partner and I each keep our own accounts?
Absolutely — that’s the whole idea: merge without merging. You each keep your own accounts and choose what becomes part of the shared household view.
Can I control what my partner sees?
Yes — you decide what’s shared, account by account, so personal accounts can stay private while shared ones show up in your household view. You’re always in control of your own data.
How do I invite my partner?
Once you’re set up, send your partner an email invite from Merger and they’ll get a link to join your household. They create their own login, and then your budgets, goals, and check-ins are shared.
What if we break up or want to separate our finances?
Either partner can unlink the household at any time, and you each keep your own account and login. Your shared budgets and goals stay with the household; if you have questions about your specific situation, email us at Kameron@mergerinc.com.
Is Merger useful if I’m single?
Definitely — you get the same weekly check-ins, goals, calculators, and Financial Health Score. Plenty of people use Merger solo to build steadier money habits.
Privacy & security
Is my financial data safe?
Your bank connections are read-only through Plaid, and your data is encrypted while it’s stored with us. You also control what’s shared inside your household, account by account.
What do you do with my data?
We use your data to run Merger for you — to power your check-ins, goals, and score — and nothing more. For the full details on how your information is handled, see our Privacy Policy.
How does “Chat with Finn” handle my private info?
Before anything reaches our AI provider, your personal details are replaced with placeholders, so identifying information stays on our side. The provider, Anthropic, doesn’t use your data to train its models.
Can the AI see my real balances and my partner’s info?
Identifying details are replaced with placeholders before a request leaves Merger, so the AI works with stand-ins rather than your real personal information. It’s built to help you with your money without handing over who you are.
What is Plaid and why do you use it?
Plaid is the bank-connection service trusted by millions of apps to link accounts securely. We use it so you can connect read-only — you never share your banking password with us.
Where can I read your full privacy policy?
You’ll find it linked in the footer of every page, or head straight to our Privacy Policy. It lays out exactly what we collect and how it’s handled.
Rewards
What are streak rewards?
Streak rewards are real perks you earn for keeping up your weekly check-in streak. The idea is simple — showing up consistently is what builds better money habits, so we celebrate it.
What rewards can I earn?
Rewards build up the longer you keep your weekly streak going — the further you go, the more there is to earn. You’ll see the milestones and what each one unlocks inside the app.
Do rewards cost extra?
No — rewards are earned just by showing up for your weekly check-ins, at no extra cost. They’re part of your subscription, not an add-on.
What happens to my streak if I miss a week?
A single slip won’t necessarily wipe out your streak — there’s a short grace period, so life happening once in a while is okay. Just hop back in and keep going.
Ambassador program
How do I earn money by referring friends?
Turn on the ambassador program in your settings, share your personal link, and earn real cash for everyone who joins through it. It’s a way to get paid for spreading something that actually helps people.
Is it real cash or just points?
It’s real cash — no points, no gimmicks. You earn actual money for the people you bring on board.
Is there a limit on how much I can earn?
There’s no cap on how many people you can bring on, so what you earn is up to you. Share as widely as you like.
How do I track referrals and payouts?
You’ll find everything in your ambassador dashboard inside the app, where you can see who’s joined and what you’ve earned. It’s all in one place.
How much do I earn per referral?
You’ll see the current payout details when you turn on the program in your settings. We keep the specifics in the app so they’re always up to date.
Do I need to be a paying subscriber to be an ambassador?
You can switch the ambassador program on from your account settings once you’re signed up. If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible, email us at Kameron@mergerinc.com and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Cancellation & refunds
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel anytime from your account settings under Subscription — no phone calls, no hoops. You’ll keep access through the end of the period you’ve already paid for.
Will I get a refund if I cancel?
When you cancel, your subscription stays active through the end of your current paid period rather than being refunded for unused time. If you think something’s gone wrong with a charge, email us at Kameron@mergerinc.com and we’ll take a look.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
If you cancel, you keep access until your paid period ends, and you can come back later. If you’d like your personal data deleted, our Privacy Policy explains how that works and you can always reach us at Kameron@mergerinc.com.
Can I pause instead of cancelling?
You can cancel anytime and keep your access through the end of the period you’ve paid for, then rejoin whenever you’re ready. If a pause would suit you better, drop us a line at Kameron@mergerinc.com.
Devices & platforms
What devices can I use Merger on?
Merger runs in your web browser, so you can use it on your phone, tablet, or computer — anything with a modern browser. There’s nothing to install.
Is there a mobile app?
Merger is a web app, so there’s no separate download from an app store — you open it right in your phone’s browser. You can add it to your home screen for quick access if you like.
Can my partner and I use it on different devices at the same time?
Yes — you each sign in on your own device and see your shared household together. Since it runs in the browser, you can both be in at once.
Do I need to download anything to start?
Nope — there’s no download. Just open Merger in your browser, sign up, and you’re in.
